Teaching wasn’t always part of my plan. My undergraduate degree is in Risk Management, and for many years, my focus was on raising my family as a stay-at-home mom. When I began homeschooling my two children from 4th through 8th grade, everything changed — that experience completely transformed my perspective on learning and ignited a passion for education I hadn’t expected.

One of my children is dyslexic, and helping him develop reading skills led me to seek specialized training in Orton-Gillingham, a structured, multisensory approach to literacy. What began as a way to support my own child soon grew into a calling to help all students who struggle with reading and writing.

After 18 years at home, I made a bold career shift and returned to school to become a certified teacher. Since then, I’ve taught 6th grade English Language Arts for several years, GED classes at a local community college, and provided tutoring for struggling readers and writers, including students with dyslexia and other learning differences. These experiences have shown me that every learner’s path is unique — and that with the right support, every student can grow as a reader and writer.

My educational journey has been as diverse as my teaching experiences. After earning my undergraduate degree in Risk Management, I went on to pursue my passion for literacy and learning by earning two master’s degrees from the University of West Alabama — one in Learning, Design, and Technology and another in Secondary English Language Arts.

These programs deepened my understanding of instructional design and evidence-based literacy practices, helping me merge creativity with structure in the classroom. My training in Orton-Gillingham and differentiated instruction allows me to meet students where they are — and give them the tools to grow in confidence and competence.

I believe that reading and writing are more than academic skills — they are gateways to confidence, curiosity, and lifelong learning. My classroom philosophy centers on meaningful literacy instruction that reaches every learner, from the high-achieving student to the struggling reader.

I’m passionate about helping teachers and students make sense of reading through explicit instruction, structured support, and creative engagement. Whether it’s through my classroom teaching, tutoring, or the literacy resources I design for other educators, my goal remains the same: To help every student become a stronger, more confident reader and writer.
